Catherine, 42, mom of two boys, used to hand her older son Robert, 8, a little candy every day after school. "I told myself it was just a treat," she says.
It wasn't just a treat. Every afternoon around 3pm, he turned into a different kid. Tantrums, homework ending in tears, he couldn't sit still or focus. And he kept gaining weight.
"He was always hungry. Ten minutes after a snack he was back in the pantry," she remembers. At his checkup she was told he'd probably grow out of it.
He didn't. Then the kids at school started noticing. "That's when he stopped wanting to go to school. And I felt completely helpless."
